In the 5199th year of the creation of the world, from the time when in the beginning God created heaven and earth; from the flood, the 2957th year; from the birth of Abraham, the 2015th year; from Moses and the going-out of the people of Israel from Egypt, the 1510th year; from the anointing of David as king, the 1032nd year; in the 65th week according to the prophecy of Daniel; in the 194th Olympiad; from the founding of the city of Rome, the 752nd year; in the 42nd year of the rule of Octavian Augustus, when the whole world was at peace, in the sixth age of the world: Jesus Christ, the eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to sanctify the world by His most merciful coming, having been conceived by the Holy Ghost, and nine months having passed since His conception was born in Bethlehem of Juda of the Virgin Mary, having become man.

From today’s reading of the Roman Martyrology from the hour of Prime in the Divine Office.

I love the suspense and the buildup of how the Martyrology puts the Incarnation into the context of history.

Know thyself, and you will become a garnerer who every day goes forth to a fresh field for God and is found at nightfall still busy binding sheaves that will stay tight for all eternity. Know thyself, and there will be no footstep in your life that will be without specific godly meaning. Know thyself, and you will come to some knowledge of the Infinite.

A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.

This is one of fourteen wooden reliefs of the mysteries of the Rosary in the little side chapel at my parish. They’re each about a foot in diameter, and I don’t remember how old they are… but pretty old. They’re absolutely stunning too.

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
