This is one of fourteen wooden reliefs of the mysteries of the Rosary in the little side chapel at my parish.
They’re each about a foot in diameter, and I don’t remember how old they are… but pretty old. They’re absolutely stunning too.
Tota pulchra es, Maria,
et macula originalis non est in te.
Tu gloria Jerusalem, tu laetitia Israel,
tu honorificentia populi nostri:
Tu advocata peccatorum, O Maria.
Virgo prudentissima, Mater clementissima,
ora pro nobis ad Dominum Iesum Christum.
.
Thou art all beautiful, Mary,
and the original stain is not in thee.
Thou art the glory of Jerusalem, thou art the joy of Israel,
Thou art the great honour of our people.
Thou art the advocate of sinners, O Mary,
Virgin most prudent, Mother most merciful,
Pray for us to Our Lord Jesus Christ.
A fourth century prayer to Our Lady. Some of the antiphons from the Office of the Immaculate Conception are taken from it, and it’s traditionally greatly loved by Franciscans.
I love this version of it! It’s Rossini’s arrangement, sung by the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word on their BEAUTIFUL Marian CD, Ecce Mater Dei. If you can find it (it’s older, and kind of difficult to find) you should get it! (Your best bet is the EWTN or OLAM gift shops, I think.)
